Hi Folks,

many thanks for your responses and, thanks to Manfred for doing those tests. Sorry I was busy all day yesterday so I didn't have time to posts the results of the tests that I did yesterday morning so here goes.

and for reference - my own system fireface 400
I put the fireface at 31db on the second shot to try and emulate the mackie's noise floor. I could not get my fireface system to register anything less than the full 24bits.

Next up bits 17 to 24 switch on and off in unison in the mackie with preamp near 60db.

Next up - I've modified Frank's sine wave test to give a more detailed picture. Sine wave is 1hz at -30db to provide a sufficiently shallow curve at magnification. Files have 40db processed gain and are at cubase's maximum editor magnification. Sine was output on mackie aux and routed to line in, then tested on home system routed from fireface out 3 to fireface in 3.

Ok this is my last post on the matter as I think you'll all agree this is very time consuming. I'm not in any position to claim (and would not bother now) that all v3 desks have this or that even v5.1 has it either - Our D8b is sending mic line signal to our pc and previously our HDr 24/96 as 16bit resolution files - I'm no longer prepared to debate that fact. The evidence for this desk is overwhelming.

If Bitter is wrong, then why does it only indicate problems with d8b files
If Cubase stats are wrong, why do they only indicate problems with d8b files
If digicheck is wrong, why does it only indicate problems with the d8b signal
If magnified screenshots in cubase are no way to analyse 16/24bit differences , why do they only indicate problems with D8b files
If Magnified screenshots in audacity are no way to analyse 16/24bit differences, why do they only indicate problems with D8b files

Incidentally, you can leave quicktime out of any debate. I created a 16bit file in cubase and exported it at 16 so the bottom 8 bits get lopped off, I reimported it to cubase which converted it to 24bit (adding 8 empty bits - still registering as a 16bit in Cubase's stats process) and i took this new file from cubase's audio folder - -so it never got exported - it's a 16bit resolution file in a 24bit shell. so I popped it in Quicktime.

All most other programs do is read the file header (file enthusiasts can correct me on the correct terminology), they don't analyze the waveform within - they don't check which bits get used - they just read the file format. Cubase's estimate resolution feature is a process of analysing the resulting waveform from that file.

Anyway, The D8b has been a good friend to me over the years (if a slightly deceitful one in my case), bit it's time to move on - to higher bit depths at least.

THIS IS A 16 BIT PARROT

Uh, didn't you bring all this up in the first place? I mean, you did start this thread and ask for opinions and advice, which takes other people's time, right? Now I don't quite understand your tone. Maybe I'm just reading it wrong.

Most definitely a problem with your board. Bummer! I've tested mine in the past after getting the 24-bit EPROMs for the DIO8 cards and then after each upgrade and reinstall, and it passed. I've always used DIO8 cards.

The Aux outputs are 16-bit. That's a known fact.

I can't quite remember the particulars, and I may have it screwed up in my head, but at one point there was a problem with a version of V3 (I think) where you had to set the Digital Trim off of zero (unity) or the board would output that channel as 16-bit.

Just curious as to why you're still using V3?

Good luck.

I am curious too, at the current price for the upgrade to v5.1 it really doesn't make any sense to use this desk without upgrading it. I bought it back when it was a pretty coin and I am happy I did.

Me thinks Mr. Spanner is actually a Spaniard in the works. An under the bridge dweller. Sheesh. What a waste of time and space.

1 Hz? I've been on the lookout for a subwoofer but the poor old buggers don't seem to reach to those depths.

Haha I just checked into the conversation to see what the conclusion was and when I went to jump back to the main page I had to answer the "Does the d8b run in 16 bits or 24bits" question! Made me laugh.
