Strange sound

Postby verner » Thu Oct 26, 2017 5:16 pm

Hi
I'm new to this forum , and I have a strange problem with my my d8b , its connected by tdif to a Red24 Soundscape daw. I have not used for a couple of weeks , but when I tried today all tracks were sounding like they went through a spring reverb ?? and I can only play back not record ??
Anyone know why ??
Best regards

Hi Verner and welcome.

I would start by checking your reference (Sync) signals.

Make sure that you have the "Master / Slave" selections correct. On the d8b this is in the "setup" section than, "Digital I/O", then "Apogee Clock". This is set to Internal in d8b is the Master, and External if the d8b is the slave.

You must have an Apogee Clock card installed in you d8b for this the work. The stck card that comes with the d8b will not do this. Tthe d8b and the Red24 will need a BNC cable between the Sync connection. The Red24 will need to have it's Ref states set the opposite of the d8b.

This is where I would start.

Post back.

Again, welcome.

Cheers

Hi Bruce
I have now chekked in the d8b setup digital i/o , but i cant find the master/slave setting ?. In the red 24 soundscape under master clock TDIF A , and under syncronization its set to Mtc Master.
The transport function and record in/out is done by midi and is working

Hi Verner;

I can't speak to the Red24, but when I have time I will see what I can find on the Internet, but to clarify the d8b doesn't say Master / Slave. In will say "Apogee Clock", you choose either "Internal" which means the d8b is the master, or "External" which means it is the slave.

The other thing is, as I mentioned above, you must have an Apogee Sync Card in you d8B. If there is no card the option to choose the an "Internal" or "External" Reference signal will not come up. The d8b can not be referenced to or can not reference to another device. It is stand alone. This means it is not clocking to, or being clocked to, your Red24. The result of that can be "Weird" sounds, or jumping audio, or ???????.

The transport controls will function as they are a part of the MIDI path, not the Sync Path.

If I am wrong with any of this or if other members have thoughts, they will chime in!

Hope that helps.

Cheers
Bruce

Hi Bruce
In the setup there in no “internal/external” , but under the
Window tape 1-8 ,type apogee DIO ,same under tape 9-16 and 17-24 . It has Worning now since 2003 , so it can’t be because of a missing card i Think ?
When i se the setup in the red24 is says Master clock TDIF-A

If I were you, I would cut your problem in half. See what a mic sounds like just with the console and see which side of the equation your problem is on be it console or Red24.

Thanks Crash. Good Call!

Hey Verner. When in the "Set Up" tab, you will see another tab that says "Digital I/O" . This is not the "Tape I/O. If you have an Apogee Sync card then the bottom right hand corner there is the words "Apogee Clock" with a box below that that allows to to select either Internal or External Word. I would assume, that, if you do not have the Apogee Card installed on the back of your d8b, then this selection will not be there.

If you don't have the Apogee Clock card installed I do not think you can reference to an external clock source like your red14. You would then have jitter or weird sounding audio. But start with Crash's suggestion.
